Spanish heat, castanets, and soulful melodies from Andalusia... in the piano quartet by Spanish composer Turina—rarely heard in concert halls these days—we are immersed in the nocturnal atmosphere of his birthplace, Seville.
Before this, we are treated to one of the most curious pieces in the history of chamber music, the Duet for cello and double bass by the “opera composer” Rossini. The Duet seemed to have been forgotten for a long time. Not surprising, as the piece was only rediscovered in 1968 when it was auctioned at Sotheby's. It was offered by the descendants of Solomon – a bank manager from London who commissioned this piece from Rossini.
First there was the song about a trout that darted about happily in the water, unaware that a fisherman would soon hook it. Schubert's famous song was already very popular at that time. A cellist friend liked it so much that he asked Schubert to incorporate this “delightful song” into a new composition for piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. And thus it happened…
One of Schubert's most beloved chamber music works, paired with Turina's sultry romantic piano quartet and Rossini's sun-drenched bouquet, played by a distinguished international ensemble.
A closing concert to savor!
