Immerse yourself in the deep melancholy, fiery passion, and unprecedented emotional complexity of The Slavic Soul. De mystieke, diepgevoelde paradox, waarin troostrijke weemoed en hartstochtelijk verlangen (toska) can suddenly ignite into an ecstatic, vibrant zest for life - reflects the pure essence of the Eastern European identity. In this program, cellist Pamela Smits and pianist Tobias Borsboom masterfully lay bare these emotional extremes.
The concert opens warm-bloodedly with Balada a Serenáda van de jeugdige Josef Suk. Dit werk wordt gevolgd door Klid (Silent Woods) by his teacher and father-in-law Antonín Dvořák, evoking the mystical and poetic tranquility of the Bohemian forest. The idyll then shifts with the First Cello Sonata by van Bohuslav Martinů.
Only after intensive hypnotherapeutic treatments by Nikolai Dahl - a doctor and amateur cellist - did Rachmaninoff overcome his blockage. The creative outpouring that unleashed afterwards resulted in, among other works, this sonata:from the depths of melancholic struggle to a triumphant emotional victory. With special thanks to Dr.Dahl!
